When an African writer attempts to monetise their craft on writing platforms, they often hit walls regarding payment processing, audience reach, and local relevance. Iko Africa is built to dismantle these barriers.

The African writing platform is developing a suite of products that allow writers to operate as creative entrepreneurs, providing them with the data, community, and financial pathways necessary to build sustainable literary careers.

Since its launch in 2023, Iko Africa has grown to support over 20,000 users. While this growth validates the demand for a dedicated space for African storytelling, the objective has extended beyond vanity metrics or social engagement. The fundamental challenge for an African writer often goes beyond a lack of visibility to a lack of integrated tools designed for their specific economic reality.

    The team

The evolution of Iko Africa is a testament to the belief in the power of African narratives. The platform was originally founded by Emmanuel Eyo, Shalom Effiom, and Josephine Inika, whose vision laid the foundation for what Iko Africa would become.

The early team, including Emmanuella Ikwen, Albert Nkereuwem, Precious Affiah, Godsgift Emmanuel, Kegbu Mgbe, Nehela Patel, and Ewan Isinugben, helped expand that vision and move the platform from concept to a thriving ecosystem.

    Building for the African context

Iko Africa is building tools that help writers understand their audience through granular data and access direct monetisation tailored to African payment gateways. The platform is focused on rooting our product direction in the realities of African readership culture and the creative-led economy.

The next phase of Iko Africa will see the introduction of more sophisticated tools designed to help creators manage their portfolios and scale their reach. The platform wants to evolve from being a content destination to the engine room for the African writing industry.

The African tech ecosystem is maturing, and with that maturity comes the need for sector-specific infrastructure. By focusing on the written word, Iko Africa is securing a vital part of the continent’s cultural and intellectual exports. It is building for the long haul, ensuring that the next generation of African writers has the digital scaffolding required to turn their passion into a viable and scalable profession.
