The pool of free mobile document editing apps just got bigger. There’s Google’s Quickoffice and the beastly Kingsoft Office, both for Android and iPhone. There’s also iWork, exclusive to iPhone users, and a host of other lesser known mobile document editors. Now Microsoft Office Mobile has joined the club of free mobile document editing apps. Well sort of – it’s only free for “home use”.
This is coming on the heels of the Microsoft Office for iPad launch. Before now, you needed an Office365 subscription to edit documents on the go. This is exactly what is obtainable on the new iPad version. However, for the Android (phone) and iPhone versions, you no longer need an Office365 subscription to edit documents on the go. You will still need to sign in with a Microsoft account though, to determine if you’re really using it for “home use” only.
So basically, Microsoft will let you use their Mobile Office app for free on your phones, but not for free on your tablets. Okay. If you’d like to try it out, download here for Android and here for iPhone.
