The Republic of Benin has commenced the deployment of 4G LTE wireless technology, which will be managed by the state-backed operator, Benin Telecoms according to reports.

The launch of the service is seen as an important part of Beninโ€™s vision for a digital future while allowing it to catch up with Nigeria, Ghana and Cote dโ€™Ivoire; the LTE services will be utilizing the 1800 MHz frequency band.

The Director-general of Benin Telecoms, Djalil Assouma, said โ€œthe LTE will allow farmers in remote locations to sell products all over the world, entrepreneurs and students to create online businesses and sell services from home, and young artists and music lovers to download a song track in under 1 second or 1 hour of video in under 1 minuteโ€.

Benin Telecoms currently offers wireless voice and data service via its Kanakoo divisionโ€™s CDMA 2000 1x and 1xEV-DO networks.
