Kenya’s mobile telecom firm, Safaricom, has opened up M-PESA’s API to developers.
With this development, Safaricom expects apps that will be compatible with the M-PESA portal to be developed leveraging the M-PESA data and infrastructure, IT News reports. Developers are expected to come up with state-of-the-art and timely apps such as business to consumer (B2C), consumer to business (C2B), business to business (B2B) or anything creative and innovative.
“As we have always said, innovation is at the heart of everything we do. We do however accept that innovation cannot come from us alone – it takes partnerships to come up with some of the best possible solutions that will help transform lives,” said Betty Mwangi, Safaricom’s Director of Financial Services.
The opening up M-PESA’s API to developers may have been made possible due to the recall of Safaricom’s servers to Kenya from Germany and the introduction of an ecommerce platform, Lipa Na M-PESA, according to IT News Africa.
