A while back, I shared a piece on the Pirates of Nigerian Twitter , how they’re ruining discovery via Twitter Trends and how the brands who pay them don’t really get any value for their money.

This morning happened to be a really good day for Nigerian Twitter as it seemed like only about 20% of the top ten where engineered by “trendstarters” . As at the time of penning this, “Where Una Dey” was on top of the Nigeria Trends list. It happens to be a new track by veteran Hip-hop artiste, Modenine. Take a quick glance at the image above. See how Modenine is the the sole featured person on top of the search result? Notice how the the first few tweets are links to the new track?

For all I know, this is an organic trend. At worst it’s pseudo-organic – he could easily have paid tons of publicists to feature the song on their blogs and have thousands of their followers share on Twitter. What matters is he got value for his money. If you go to his Twitter profile, you’ll notice he was also tweeting and RTing for most of it, at least up until his song started trending at midnight yesterday. Now that’s how you trend on Nigerian Twitter.
