According to a statement by Ibrahim Guimba-Saidou,  the Senior VP of SES Broadband Services, over 300 million Africans are at least 50km away from a fibre or cable broadband connection.

Furthermore, another 400 million Africans do not have any form of access to the internet, bringing the number of Africans with limited or no internet connection to 700 million.

For perspective, Africa is estimated to be host to over 1 billion people. That means only about 300 million Africans have access to good internet. Last year, the International Telecommunication Union revealed figures stating that there is an average of between 10 to 25 internet users, for every 100 Africans.

3oo million internet users isn’t quite a bad statistic for Africa, considering the current challenges. But it also means there is plenty room for improvement.
