Great-Westerford-building-fire-600x400

There was a fire outbreak on the roof of one the buildings where Teraco and Hetzner data centres are located at the Great Westerford building in Newlands, Cape Town around 8:30am earlier today according to a report.

Teraco CEO Lex van Wyk said, “The cause of the fire is currently unknown, but it was extinguished quickly by the Cape Town fire department.”

Due to rapid response by the firefighters, the fire was contained. Report says some wireless equipment on the roof of the building were damaged but there was no damage done to the cooling system equipment, which happens to be located on the roof of the building.

Despite the fire, Teraco and Hetzner’s Cape Town data centres continued to operate without any problems, the electricity supply to the building was cut by the fire department, but the data centres’ UPSs and generators kicked in which prevented downtime.

Hetzner, meanwhile, intimated that “the fire had been caused by an electrical problem. Hetzner’s data centres are located in the basement of the building and as yet remain unaffected by the fire,” in an e-mail to customers today.
