Move aside, electronic cash! We just printed a QR code on a banknote, because even though we posture about going cashless, digital paper money is a hella innovative way to look, well, innovative. I mean, with people landing spacecraft on moving comets and what not? They ain’t got nothing on us, that’s for sure, because this digital banknote has superpowers.

At the back side, the CBN introduced a feature called Quick Response Code, QRC. It is a feature that highlights and sources all the information about the centenary.

“This makes the note the first digital banknote in the world,” he said.

The QRC is an application found on the smart phone or Ipad. Once the barcode on the back of the note is scanned it shows the President’s face and then comes up with all information on Nigeria’s history.

President Goodluck Jonathan thanked the CBN for unveiling the note.

Broadband penetration in Nigeria is still just over 30 percent. Smartphone penetration is even less. You need a smartphone to scan a QR code. So I guess this innovation is not for the masses.

Granted, it’s a symbolic gesture to commemorate Nigeria’s centenary. Only question now is who got rich(er) over this contract? Not likely any Nigerian techies we know. Even finance minister, Ngozi Okonjo Iweala is curious?
