Kenya-based non-profit organisation, Gearbox has announced it is kicking off its hardware incubation programme, reports Disrupt Africa.
The programme will commence in June, 2015.
The incubation will operate on a pay-per-month membership model. Members will have access to design software tools, prototyping equipment such as 3D printers, 3D scanners, laser cutters, industrial sewing machines and vinyl cutters.
Gearbox is a makerspace where Kenyan developers will learn how to build things and interact keenly with hardware. In the last few months, Gearbox selected five companies to be incubated for up to three years.
Dr Kamau Gachigi, Director of the organisation, said, “It became quite evident that a hub hardware space would be quite useful. There is a need for it. It is something that a lot of people have wanted.
The organisation wants to bring about a shift in the way techies work by nurturing a community of members working on projects in computer technology, industrial art, robotics and electronics.
