International enterprise software development firm, SAP Africa today revealed that it will host a software coding pilot project, for students of Ojodu Grammar School as part of the run-up to Africa Code Week (ACW), set for October 2015.
The project is set up to expose up to a hundred of these students, aged between 8 and 11, to software coding skills, in a fun-filled, hands-on workshop.
“Preparing the ground for Africa Code Week is critical and these software pilot projects are giving us a clear picture of best-practices to adopt across other African countries as the project gains momentum,” says Franck Cohen, SAP President: Europe, Middle East & Africa. “Africa Code Week… aligns perfectly with SAP Africa’s Skills for Africa initiative which promotes both skills development and job creation across the continent. It will also contribute to Africa becoming a future net exporter of technology skills to the rest of the world,” he added.
The African Code Week will seek to empower participants between the ages 8 to 24 with software programming skills using Scratch system. The initiative will run in 11 African countries: South Africa, Nigeria, Angola, Cameroon, Egypt, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Morocco, Senegal, Togo and Tunisia.
SAP, along with Simplon from France, the Galway Education Centre from Ireland and the Cape Town Science Centre are the driving forces behind Africa Code Week.
In May, SAP announced its intention to launch the SAP Smart Academy in Nigeria later this year.
