The new Samsung Z smartphone will be the first smartphone ever to ship with the Tizen operating system developed by Samsung. Of course, Samsung is nowhere near abandoning Android. At least not any time soon. I like to think of Tizen as Samsung’s first step at “securing the future”.

This video below gives us a first look of what the operating system looks like.

It does look like it takes a lot of inspiration from Android, particularly with the drop-down notification centre. It is worth mentioning that Tizen is based on the old Meego platform that run on the old Nokia N9. So if you found yourself entranced in some Nokia nostalgia, you’re probably not alone.

For now, I can’t say much about functionality and performance of the Tizen OS until I get to experience it first-hand. All I can say is that it looks somewhat refreshing.

The Samsung Z will launch first in Russia around the 3rd quarter of 2014.
