Once upon a time, when Konga was young and eager to to please, they delivered my shopping to me on Sunday. I’m not sure they still do these days. If they don’t, then they just got one-upped by Jumia who has just announced that they will now deliver to their customers on Sunday after 11am.
It would seem that next leg of the battle for Nigerian ecommerce will be fought and won on the field of logistics. Jumia and Konga, both the largest ecommerce entities in Nigeria, have between them raised raised north of 150 million dollars.
A significant portion of their funding goes to inventory and online and offline marketing, but more goes into building and refining logistics operations in a low infrastructure environment, to the point that Konga has gone as far to create a separate logistics and delivery subsidiary.
The release doesn’t say if Jumia’s Sunday deliveries are available to customers nationwide, or if it’s just in Lagos. Till we receive an official response, I suspect it’s the latter.
