No, you didn’t. Neither did I.

Facebook just announced the inclusion of a new feature, ‘Legacy Contact’.

This feature will provide users the option of either having their accounts deleted upon their demise or have it transfered to a Legacy Contact.

The heir to this account will be able to write on the deceased’s timeline, accept friend requests, respond to condolences and update the profile picture and cover picture of the deceased.

The original account holder can also predetermine the level of access the heir will have such as: picture folders, post and profile information.

However, Facebook noted that the Legacy Contact will at no time have access to the account holders private messages.

According to a post by Facebook’s product management team, “We’re introducing a new feature that lets people choose a legacy contact—a family member or friend who can manage their account when they pass away. Once someone lets us know that a person has passed away, we will memorialize the account.”

This development means Facebook users can now decide what they want to happen to their accounts once they die.

The Facebook legacy contact feature is currently limited to the United States and will be extended to other users, in a matter of time.
