Nah, 79 freaking dollars for a brand new laptop? Not sure how to react to this one. At today’s exchange rate, that’s still less than N30,000. I think I called this one in my Remix Mini Android PC review. Jide Technology’s Remix OS is enabling computing at prices so low that it will likely help introduce the next billion people to computing and eventually, bring them online.

Allwinner Remix OS

Chinese chip manufacturer, Allwinner is looking to take advantage of the x86 version of Android that Jide built, to make what we will know as the cheapest laptop computer in the world. Allwinner’s laptop sports an 11.6-inch display with a resolution of 1366×768, runs on a 64-bit, four core, ARM Cortex-A53 processor, has 1GB of RAM, and stores data on an 8GB SSD. All for $79 for the base model. They’ve also got a $99 model with a 14.1-inch screen, and a laptop-tablet hybrid with an 11.6-inch touchscreen.

I found it on ARMDevices, and they even got themselves a reference model to play with (see the video below), even though nothing’s set in stone yet.

We have reached out to Jide Technology for comment.

Update Thu 28/4/16: Jide Technology has confirmed that the $79 Allwinner laptop rumour is indeed not a rumour. I think low-cost laptops like this will help achieve Jide’s objectives of enabling computing for the bottom of the pyramid, and I’d love to get a chance to use one of them soon.
