MTN Ghana has increased its subscriber base by 12.3%. It means the Telecoms company now has 22.6 million subscribers and a 55.21% share of the market.

In South Africa, Fintech company, JUMO has raised $55 million 

JUMO was founded in 2014 by Andrew Watkins-Ball and has previously raised funding from LeapFrog investments, Anthemis Group and Vostok Emerging Finance.

The company has now raised $55 million from LeapFrog investments, Goldman Sachs and Odey Asset Management. JUMO will be looking to launch new products in Africa and Asia as well a expand into new markets. 

Kenyan communications company, Safaricom, has signed a deal to resell Amazon Web Services in Kenya.

Here’s a soundbite from Safaricom’s CEO, Michael Joseph:

“We chose to partner with AWS because it offers customers the broadest and deepest cloud platform, overall commitment to security excellence, and a strong culture of customer obsession. This agreement will allow us to accelerate our efforts to enable digital transformation in Kenya,”

Ethiopian startup, BeBlocky has developed a gamified app which teaches kids how to code. 

“Africa is a skills gap” is almost an aphorism and companies like SemiColon and Andela are upskilling individuals by teaching them how to code.

But BeBlocky is taking a different approach, focusing on children within the age of seven to fourteen and presenting code concepts in graphical puzzle-style programming blocks.

How do IT salaries in South Africa compare to Amsterdam?

Spoiler: Amsterdam has a higher average salary for workers in IT. 

South Africa has a major skills shortage, and qualified professionals are continuing to leave in search of better opportunities overseas.
