For years, competition among savings and investment providers in Nigeria has largely revolved around one thing: returns. Higher interest rates have often been the biggest attraction, with financial institutions competing to offer increasingly attractive yields in a bid to win customers.
Today, that conversation appears to be changing.
As digital financial services become more accessible and Nigerians gain more options for managing their money, many savers are looking beyond advertised returns. Questions around credibility, regulation, transparency and long-term reliability are becoming just as important as the numbers attached to an investment product.
That shift reflects a maturing financial services market.
According to EFInA’s 2023 Access to Financial Services Survey, nearly three out of every four Nigerian adults now have access to formal or informal financial services. Digital platforms have made opening savings accounts and investing easier than ever before. Yet access alone has not eliminated hesitation. For many Nigerians, confidence in the institution behind a financial product has become a deciding factor.
Years of failed investment schemes, fraudulent operators and unrealistic promises have understandably made many people more cautious. Before committing their money, savers increasingly want to know whether an institution is properly regulated, whether it communicates transparently, and whether it has the systems and governance to protect customers over the long term.
For NorthQuest Finance, a Central Bank of Nigeria licensed finance company, these changing expectations mirror what the company has observed while serving a growing customer base across the country.
Jerry Ehanmo, Director of NorthQuest Finance, believes the industry’s next phase of growth will be shaped less by competition on returns and more by the confidence institutions are able to build with customers.
“People may notice your interest rate first, but they stay because they trust you. Trust influences every financial decision, whether someone chooses to save again next month, recommends your platform to family and friends, or commits to a long-term financial goal. Building that confidence takes consistency, transparency and keeping your promises over time.”
The company says this philosophy has influenced how it designs its products and interacts with customers. Rather than encouraging short-term saving behaviour, the focus has been on helping people develop habits that support long-term financial wellbeing.
That thinking has also been reinforced by customer behaviour.
Since launching in 2024, NorthQuest Finance has grown to more than 60,000 customers, who have collectively saved billions of naira through its platform. According to the company, many of its customers choose QLock to stay committed to their savings goals, while many others rely on AutoSave to build consistent saving habits through automatic contributions, removing the need to rely on willpower or memory.
Beyond the figures, the company believes these patterns point to something bigger. Nigerians are increasingly looking for financial solutions that fit naturally into their daily lives, help them remain consistent, and are provided by institutions they believe will stand the test of time.
For Chukwuka Obike, Chief Operating Officer of NorthQuest Finance, trust is rarely built through a single interaction. Instead, it develops through hundreds of small experiences customers have with a financial institution.
“Customers notice everything. They notice how easy it is to get started, how quickly issues are resolved, how transparent communication is, and whether commitments are consistently honoured. Those everyday experiences shape confidence far more than advertising campaigns or promotional offers.”
He added that operational discipline has become just as important as product innovation.
“People are trusting us with goals that matter deeply to them, from paying school fees and funding businesses to building emergency savings. That responsibility demands strong governance, secure systems and a culture that puts customers first. Trust is earned every day through execution.”
Industry analysts say this shift is becoming increasingly evident across Nigeria’s financial services sector. As digital products become easier to replicate, factors such as customer experience, regulatory compliance and institutional credibility are beginning to carry greater weight in influencing customer loyalty.
That evolution is also changing how financial products are developed. Automation, goal-based savings, personalised financial planning and simplified customer journeys are increasingly becoming standard expectations, reflecting a broader emphasis on helping customers build lasting financial habits rather than simply offering another place to save.
Jerry Ehanmo believes this represents a healthy direction for the industry.
“The future of financial services will be defined by institutions that consistently earn public confidence. Innovation will always matter, but innovation without trust is difficult to sustain. The organisations that build lasting relationships with customers will ultimately create the greatest long-term value, both for the people they serve and for the industry as a whole.”
As Nigeria’s financial services ecosystem continues to evolve, competition is likely to extend far beyond interest rates alone. The institutions that succeed over the coming years may not necessarily be those offering the highest returns, but those that consistently demonstrate credibility, transparency and reliability in the eyes of the customers they serve.
