It turns out the update gods did smile on Blackberry afterall. We’ve confirmed that an official release of Android 6.0 Marshmallow is on its way to Blackberry PRIV users. Specifically, it should be available for download in a few weeks – between late April and early May. The update will be delivered over-the-air, and as expected it will be a “security-amplified” version of Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
They’ve also rolled out a Beta program for bleeding edge geeks like yours truly, who don’t like to wait for “official releases”. To take part, you’ll have to report bugs and enable background diagnostic reporting so the engineers at Blackberry can analyse the data in real time. While this is great news, all the slots for the beta program got filled up less than an hour after it was first announced on Blackberry’s blog, so you will have to join a waitlist, and you may be accepted. If you’re lucky.
Very welcome development, if you ask me. Even though Blackberry has been more aggressive than any other Android device makers in rolling out monthly security updates (I got mine promptly, when I reviewed the PRIV), Android devices still leave a lot to be desired when updates are the focus of the conversation.
I wonder how long till Blackberry Priv users get Android N…
