A bill called the Kenya Information and Communication (Amendment) Bill 2019, which is on its way to the country’s parliament, is seeking the strength of the law to regulate social media group activities as well as activities of bloggers in the country. If the bill is passed, bloggers will be required to register with the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) or face a US$4,800 fine or jail term. The aim of the bill is reportedly to curb the spread of fake news and misinformation which is rampant across social media groups and unverifiable blog sources. Kenya is one of a number of African countries where governments are cracking down on social media freedoms either through legislation or by imposing taxes. |
