40,000 students & faculty across 13 campuses in Nairobi will continue academic activities remotely thanks to a Telkom Kenya partnership. The pan-African telecoms has come up with a customised post-paid data solution called Soma na Telkom for staff and students at the University of Nairobi. The university community will access the subscription through the purchase of SIM cards across the country and will be onboarded to the university’s e-learning platform to access lectures and other academic materials.
With the pandemic lockdowns and having to continue some activities like work, learning and keeping in touch online, internet quality, data costs and availability have become very challenging now more than ever.
Despite improvements over the years, data costs on the continent are still one of the highest globally (1GB of data costing 7.12% of average monthly income). Internet speeds are slow and availability is often concentrated on urban centres.
Telkom joins a number of other telecoms supporting continuous learning through reduced data prices and zero rating learning platforms.
While primary, secondary and pre-university learners seem to have wide range of learning platforms to choose from, universities with low tech adoption are struggling to keep lectures going at this time. |
