The International Girls in ICT Day – celebrated every fourth Thursday of April since 2010 – is a day set aside by the International Telecommunications Union  to inspire young girls to consider a career in tech, by celebrating women in tech on a global scale.

Governments, private sectors and NGOs in the various ITU member states are usually encouraged to celebrate this day by organising local events. Over 100 countries are expected to hold events this year.

This year, the ITU will host Girls in ICT Day at its Geneva Headquarters on 15 April, 2014 (that’s today) to account for local school holidays. However, the International Girls in ICT Day is officially recognized on 24 April, 2014.

From all indications, Nigeria’s Ministry of Communications and Technology has made no plans for a local event. However, the Honourable Minister, Mrs. Omobola Johnson, will be dialing in to speak during the Geneva event today. There will be a Live Webcast at 11:30 am, Nigerian time. You might want to bookmark that.

For more info on how to organise a local event and for the full programme of events, visit the official website.
