First it was MTN Nigeria. Now Airtel Nigeria is basically telling its customers that they are running out of fuel and that the network is already taking a hit. The telco made this announcement just under an hour ago via its Facebook page.
Fuel (petrol and diesel) scarcity has gripped Nigeria for four weeks now, with no end in sight, and is sending the economy into a downward spiral. Media, businesses and telecommunications are beginning to provide diminished services, or shut down outright. Poor power infrastructure means that the whole country depends on fuel and generators to generate electricity in companies, businesses and private residences.
According to reports, electricity generation in the country has fallen to a dismal low of 1,327 megawatts from 4,800 at the beginning of 2015. The fuel scarcity, caused by a deliberate fuel marketer and distributor boycott, due to alleged debts owed by government is said to be directly responsible for exacerbating the situation.
Etisalat and Glo, also major telcos in Nigeria have not made statements as to how they are faring in the fuel crises, but it’s not looking good for anyone outright. At this rate, a nationwide communications blackout is imminent.

While we are currently doing everything within our means as well as going the extra mile to ensure that all our base stations and switches are up and running, it is sad to note that it is becoming increasingly difficult to replenish current stock of diesel due to the lingering scarcity of the products.
We are also concerned that, if the situation persists, it may have adverse effects on our network, impacting both voice and data services.
Airtel, therefore wishes to assure all customers that we will continue working with all our partners and stakeholders to mitigate any negative impact as we remain committed to our promise of providing exceptional services just as we seek the cooperation and understanding of all whilst apologizing for any inconvenience at this time.
