Dropbox now lets iOS users edit PDF files in their Dropbox account. Android users will have to wait till next year for the feature.
Dropbox users with Apple devices will “be able to annotate and comment on PDFs stored in Dropbox right from their iPhones or iPads, using Acrobat Reader mobile.” To use the new function, users should click on the “Edit” button that appears after they open the file. Changes to the document will be made from inside the Dropbox iOS app.
This development comes on the back of Dropbox’s partnership with Adobe which was announced last month. The reason for this partnership is because of the growing number of PDF files Dropbox users store in their accounts. This number, which stood at 18 million as at October, signified how critical PDF files are to the productivity of Dropbox users.
In an October 2015 post on the Dropbox Blog, Thomas Hansen, Dropbox’s Global Vice President of Sales and Channel, explained that the idea behind the partnership with Adobe was to enable Dropbox users “to be able to collaborate with PDF files on Dropbox in as few steps, clicks, or swipes as possible.” Hansen added that “Ultimately, we want you to be able to work with any kind of file easily, from viewing to editing to sharing. Our collaboration with Adobe, the inventor of the PDF, is the next step in this process.”
Dropbox is taking another step towards document collaboration with this development. Last month, it announced the launch of Paper, a worthy competitor to Google Docs.
