Uber has followed in the footsteps of Dubai-based Careem and Egyptian startup Swvl to launch a bus-hailing service in Cairo. This is the first market Uber is launching the UberBus service and the results will determine the extent of a global rollout. Egypt is one of Uber’s fastest growing markets, with over 150,000 drivers giving rides through its app in 2017 alone. The company is also planning to invest in a $100 million Egyptian customer support center.

Chinese cable company StarTimes has launched a new online video streaming service called StarTimes ON, joining African companies like DSTV and iROKO, and international players like Netflix in the battle for the online video streaming market in Africa. The platform will launch with over 150 channels in over 10 languages.

Safaricom has announced the trial program of a new network coverage technology called TubeStar. The telco hopes these new base stations, which it says take up 75% less space than current ones, will become its new standard. The first station has been deployed at Clay Works along the Nairobi-Thika highway and will serve the Roysambu drift.

Venture capital firm Kuramo Capital has indicated interest in taking a 12% stake in Kenyan micro-lending startup Pezesha, per this Techweez report. Kuramo also participated in Pezesha’s Seed round earlier this year.

Gabon-based event ticketing startup Tikkeo has expanded to the Ivory Coast, Disrupt Africa reports. The startup has reportedly facilitated the sale of almost 30,000 tickets in Gabon.

Applications are now open for the Centre for Global Enterprise’ (CGE) second African Women Entrepreneurship Cooperative (AWEC) business development programme. If you’re interested deadline is December 18 and you can apply here.
