We expect the Lagos state government to be leading efforts to regulate the okada hailing sector in Nigeria but for some reason, it appears the transport unions are ahead in this regard. Early this year, it was said there was a N25 million license hanging above the heads of the operators. But that has since been shelved in favour of a daily N500 levy per okada to allow them operate in any part of the city which wasn’t previously possible without inordinate levies.

What is even more baffling are the reasons the unions are insisting on these. The companies aren’t local and some do-in-Rome-as-the-Romans rhetoric. Abubakar has more in this piece.

But what was it like in the early days of this rapidly growing sector? Chinedu Azodoh is the Chief Growth Offcier at MAX.ng, Nigeria’s foremost okada-hailing company. He knows a lot about what was before Gokada, Opay, SafeBoda and all the other operators who have since come into the space to assist Lagos’ 20 million population get around the 1,171 km² city and its gridlock traffic.

The #StopRobbingUs Campaign against harassment and extortion of workers in Nigeria’s technology sector are calling for more victims to share their stories as legal proceedings commence. Since its launch in September 2019, the campaign has raised US$45,000 and formally engaged Probitas LLP as legal representation to drive the legal advocacy. The team will be calling for the internal disciplinary process against the police officers involved to be more robust and to ensure that the guilty police officers are dismissed and punished, as a deterrent to other police officers. They will also be fighting to stop the harassment of individual bearing laptops, casual dresses and locks, the SARS’ definitive profile of an internet fraudster

Senegalese logistics startup Yobante, is expanding to South Africa. Founded in 2018, Yobante Express’ web and mobile platforms connect local couriers with local commerce to optimise domestic, cross-border and last-mile delivery. Since it launched in Senegal, Yobante Express is currently delivering more than 8,000 parcels every month and is doing deliveries for more than 90 business clients, one of which is Jumia. The company is now pursuing expansion and is also piloting in Ghana with 23 shops in Accra, and in Nigeria with 168 shops in Lagos.

An on-demand pet care service in Egypt has raised an undisclosed amount of seed funding from the Cairo Angels. Vetwork currently serves clients in Cairo, Alexandria, and the North Coast, and has just expanded to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The Cairo Angels are the leading angel investors in the MENA region.
