The South African ministry of science and technology, has unveiled a webapp to support the government’s effort against the ongoing xenophobic attacks in South Africa, the South African Government news agency reports.
The app serves as a platform for South Africans to pledge their support for the anti-xenophobia, “We Are Africa”, campaign and to submit updates on any xenophobic incident or incitement in their location.
According to the Ministry spokesperson, “The app will automatically capture the geographic location of the person, which will allow an analysis of spatially-based sentiments and patterns, thereby supporting decision-making. The app will give users the option of providing their demographic details, such as gender, age group, race, etc., without revealing their identity.”
The department said the app will enable law-enforcers such as the SAPS and the Metro Police to respond swiftly and prevent any provocation. The app was developed by Tchisseke Vicente, Herve Ntubi and in a joint effort with pretoria-based startup accelerator mlab.
The app works as advertised and currently has around 200 pledges since its launch four days ago. The first version of the application can be accessed via web using the PCs, laptops, tablets, cellphones – by visiting www.weareafrica.mobi<http://www.weareafrica.mobi>.
The app will be available on Android, Apple and Windows stores in the next few days according to the news agency.
