Connecting Africa to commerce. Connecting Africa to each other.

There’s a version of this story that starts with blockchain and cross-border trade. There’s another version that starts with a mother in Nigeria waiting for money from her son in the US. Both are the same story. This is UP Finance.

    Why I Built This

If you wanted to send money from Nigeria to Togo right now, how would you do it?

Sit with that question for a second. Think through the actual steps — the banks you’d need, the fees you’d pay, the days you’d wait, the exchange rate someone else would decide for you. For most people, there isn’t a clean answer. UP Finance is our answer: send it through blockchain technology and the power of stablecoins, instantly, securely, and without a stack of middlemen deciding what you keep. That gap, between two neighboring African countries, is the entire reason UP Finance exists.

My name is Wegba Ononuro. I’m Urhobo, from Delta State, and I’ve been an entrepreneur since university — which is a polite way of saying I have failed more times than most people ever get the chance to.

I started a marketing agency. It failed. I started a web design company. It failed. I tried drop-shipping. That failed too. Then I built an investment-tech company that actually worked — it generated 30 million naira in revenue before it eventually collapsed. I started a music promotions company that made a few million naira and taught me a lot, but it never felt like mine. It wasn’t my passion.

Somewhere in all of that failing and rebuilding, I realized the one thing I had always loved, always researched obsessively, and always been genuinely good at was finance. Not finance as a job — finance as a way of understanding how people move from nothing to something. That realization is what led to UP Finance, and it’s also why I built myself a self-taught curriculum in economics and finance, starting all the way from high school level up through university level. I believe understanding money shouldn’t be a privilege reserved for the elite, and that education in it shouldn’t stop at the basics.

I’ve failed enough times to know the difference between chasing a trend and building something real. UP Finance is the real thing. My goal isn’t modest — I want to build billion-dollar companies, and I want UP Finance to be one of them. But a billion-dollar company that doesn’t change lives at the bottom isn’t one I’m interested in building.

Two Sides of the Same Mission

UP Finance is built around one idea, seen from two angles.

On the business side, we’re connecting Africa to commerce. We use blockchain technology to make something possible that has rarely existed before: a trader in Egypt exchanging value directly with a trader in Togo — fast, secure, and without the friction of traditional cross-border finance. We’re starting as a brokerage, but that’s the first step. Our long-term vision is a full peer-to-peer exchange, linking African businesses and traders to each other and to the world without the gatekeepers that have historically stood in the way.

On the customer side, we’re connecting communities. Behind every cross-border transaction is a human relationship. We want the woman in Nigeria to be able to receive money from her son in the US instantly, reliably, and without losing a chunk of it to fees and middlemen — because of blockchain technology, not in spite of the barriers that usually stand between them. That’s not a side effect of what we’re building. It’s the point.

Commerce moves economies. Community moves people. UP Finance exists at the intersection of both.

Taking Finance Back to the Grassroots

In today’s financial landscape, technology has created incredible opportunities — and just as many barriers. Too many platforms are built for the elite, the already-informed, the already-connected. UP Finance is built for everyone else.

We’re building for the student who wants to start investing but doesn’t know where to begin. For the market woman who earns in cash but dreams of saving in something more stable. For the young hustler who has heard of crypto but has never had anyone break it down honestly and simply. For the trader who just wants fast, reliable access to digital assets without hidden fees or confusing processes. For the family separated by borders who just wants sending money home to feel simple again.

We’re building for underserved communities — the towns, villages, and peri-urban areas where platforms like ours are not just rare, they’re nonexistent. These communities are full of young people who are digitally curious, eager to learn, and hungry for tools that open doors. Nobody has been going to them. Nobody has been taking the time to educate them. Nobody has been building systems with their realities in mind.

    We decided to change that.

    Meeting People Where They Are

We believe financial inclusion shouldn’t depend on your city, your network, or your exposure. So UP Finance is going into the grassroots — physically and digitally — to meet people where they are:

    • Local communities
    • Secondary schools and tertiary institutions
    • Markets and small business clusters
    • Villages with growing digital curiosity
    • Online communities that are eager but underserved

Our philosophy is simple: if people cannot come to UP, UP will go to them. That means educational content for absolute beginners, community sessions, local activations, and tools built for someone with 1MB of data, a basic Android phone, and zero prior crypto knowledge.

Building for Africa’s Next Financial Generation

Africa is home to the youngest population in the world — bright minds with creativity, ambition, and resilience. What’s missing isn’t talent, it’s opportunity. Not interest, but access. UP Finance exists to bridge that gap, with a platform built around:

    • Simple crypto access
    • Clear market insights
    • Secure transactions
    • Fast on/off ramps for cross-border transfers
    • Educational content for real growth
    • A community that supports learning, not just transactions

    The Team Behind UP Finance

None of this — the vision, the technology, the grassroots mission — happens without the team that shows up to build it every day. UP Finance is nothing without them. Every line of code, every community activation, every conversation with a first-time crypto user in a market or a village is the result of a team that believes in this mission as much as I do. I’m proud of what we’re building together, and this is as much their story as it is mine.

    Why This Matters

Financial innovation means nothing if it doesn’t touch real lives. A product is only truly successful when a trader in Cairo can do business with a trader in Lomé, and a mother in Lagos can receive money from her son abroad without wondering how much of it will disappear along the way.

UP Finance isn’t just building a platform — we’re building a movement. A financial ecosystem that understands African realities, respects the grassroots, and believes everyone, on the business side and the human side, deserves a fair shot.

We’re building for the people who need hope. For the people ready to rise. For the people who simply need a platform to lift them UP.

And we’re not stopping until every community, every village, and every young African hears about UP Finance — and knows that this financial future belongs to them too.
