One of the things I complained about in my Blackberry PRIV review was the fact that it was still running Android Lollipop 5.1.1, five months after Android 6.0 was released. After that, I stumbled on a YouTube video of a PRIV running 6.0, and after that, Blackberry confirmed that indeed, the PRIV would be getting a 6.0 update soon. The confirmation came with news that users would have to join a waitlist for the beta programme, and hopefully, they’d get accepted.
Blackberry has confirmed that from now, PRIV devices running Android 6.0 Marshmallow will be available on shop.blackberry.com, and that existing users can now download the update over-the-air. They have promised an improved DTEK app (which I think is great, because it’s one of my favourite parts of the phone), battery optimisation, and all that jazz.
“PRIV by BlackBerry is the most secure Android device in the market and we continue to find ways to further enhance users’ security and privacy by adding new features with the Marshmallow operating system update”, said Blackberry CEO, John Chen. “Enhance users’ security and privacy”. Right. This is interesting because information just came to light that Blackberry is willing to give “the authorities” access to user data…but only in certain cases.
